9 November 2021, Budapest – At the request of the OECD, the Hungarian Competition Authority participated as Lead Examiner in the Peer Review of the Eurasian Economic Union. Csaba Balázs Rigó, President of the Hungarian Competition Authority, represented the national competition authority at the high level Examination Panel on 8 November 2021.

Peer reviews are an essential part of the activities of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). In the Peer Review, the OECD and the Lead Examiners critically examine the competition laws and policies of a country (or, in this case, a community). The process provides valuable insight into how the country (community) being examined handles issues of competition and regulation, from the robustness of rules on competition law to the structure and effectiveness of institutions of competition law. Finally, the reports on peer reviews contain recommendations on competition legislation and policies.

The OECD invited Hungary, the Republic of Korea, Brazil and COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) to participate as Lead Examiners in the Peer Review of the Eurasian Economic Union. During the Peer Review of the EAEU, the OECD conducted the first fact-finding mission in June followed by the second fact-finding mission with the participation of the Lead Examiners in October. On 8 November 2011, the Examination Panel had been held with the participation of senior management officials, where Csaba Balázs Rigó, President of the Hungarian Competition Authority, represented the national competition authority. The meeting was chaired by Professor Frederick Jenny, Chair of the OECD Competition Committee, who praised the work of the GVH and its relevant and concise contribution.

"I was more than willing to take on the duties of the Lead Examiner, which provided an opportunity to increase the international esteem of Hungary. Through the OECD-GVH Regional Centre for Competition in Budapest our key role in Eastern Europe and Central Asia can also be further strengthened” – said Csaba Balázs Rigó, President of the Hungarian Competition Authority.

The report on the OECD Peer Review of the Eurasian Economic Union will be presented and discussed in the framework of the Global Forum on Competition organised by the OECD on 8 December 2021.
