Budapest, 22 June 2023 - The European Academy of Law (Europäische Rechtsakademie; ERA), one of the most renowned legal training institutions in the international platform, is holding a two-day training course in Budapest, in cooperation with the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH). The training seminar will focus on competition authority investigations and dawn raids.
The two-day training course in Budapest will focus on the practice of on-site inspections (dawn raids) by EU competition authorities in the light of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and the case law of the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights. Participants will learn, among other things, what a dawn raid by the competition authorities looks like in practice, what powers investigators have and what limits the courts' case law places on them. Participants coming to Budapest from several countries will also get practical advice on how to solve the most common problems and conflicts that arise during raids. The training will include a simulated dawn raid by expert practitioner, who will help the participants to learn the skills in practice.
"The success of a complex procedure that can take years can depend on a single piece of evidence. It is therefore very important that all parties involved, authorities, lawyers and businesses, are aware of their rights and obligations during raids. Even without malice, participants may hinder the detection of cartels through ignorance or superficial knowledge of the law, making it more difficult for the authorities to ensure fair competition. This is why it is so important to exchange experience and keep knowledge up to date at international level", said László Bak, Deputy President General of the Hungarian Competition Authority, in his opening speech at the event.
The GVH has already used the enforcement tool of raids in several cases in 2023, most recently in the area of food retailing. The GVH's podcast channel also features a discussion on the competition authority's investigative work and interesting cases of raids.
